God and Patriotism

Everybody knows, just like Jesus, Santa Claus, Superman, The Green Lantern and Gandhi, God is an American.

Our politicians always say, “And may God bless the United States of America,” after their speeches. Our sports figures always thank God for their amazing performances when they snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, and Pastor Joe Nelms even thanked God for his smokin’ hot wife in a prerace prayer at a NASCAR race in July. Ending the prayer with, “In Jesus’ name, boogity, boogity, boogity, amen.” God even backs our currency…well; I assume he does, because I know the U.S. Mint doesn’t.

The song “America the Beautiful” tells us that “God shed his grace on thee.”  If it’s in a song it has to be true. I haven’t seen other counties with any grace shed on them, and once God sheds on you, it’s there for good. Not even spray n wash will get that out.

It’s not really a secret that God likes us best. He sent Jesus riding into Yorktown on a fire breathing T-Rex to defeat Cornwallis in 1781. A shirtless muscle-bound Jesus led the American forces into Berlin in 1945 to defeat Hitler. And, who can forget the 1980 Winter Olympics “Miracle on Ice” when God helped the U.S. hockey team defeat the Soviet Union, forcing them to tear down the Berlin wall ten years later; another American victory with the help of God.

But, what’s up with God lately, is he on vacation? Hurricanes, tornados, floods, earthquakes…and right here in America. There is disapproval around the world for the way we treat them. We have discontented American citizens protesting the way our political leaders do business with corporations. And, just look at our economy. Is the big guy asleep at the wheel, or is God angry about the decline in American church goers?

We need to start cashing in some of that grace that’s been shed all over us before something bad happens, like if we started ranking lower in education than other nations or our infrastructure starts collapsing while no one is paying attention.

I think the solution is; we all just need to get back to church, praying and maybe a few human sacrifices…say, a small village in Central America. For a while, then, after God fixes everything for us, we can get back to our regularly scheduled complacency.

You’re welcome!
