A few years back, after the release of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, Mattel had a great merchandising idea: The Harry Potter Nimbus 2000 electronic broomstick. It made cool swooshing noises and vibrated. I really would have liked to have been sitting in on that meeting. A toy that you stick between your legs that vibrates–now why does that sound familiar… It was a big comedic score on the internet. However, I seriously doubt parents were amused after purchasing this for their children. In fact, I suspect many mothers kept it in their rooms. It wasn’t on the market too long before it was pulled, but here are some buyer reviews from when it was sold on Amazon. A toy enthusiast from NJ This toy was #1 on my daughter’s Christmas list. So what the heck, although it has no educational value I figured it would be good for imaginative play. It wasn’t until after she opened her gift and started playing with it that I realized that the toy may offer a more than sensational experience. The broomstick has cute sound effects and ***VIBRATES*** when they put it between their legs to fly. Come on—what were the creators [...]

Many political analysts have been criticizing Congress over the past few days for actually getting something done. They say that recently passed bills could potentially restore the public’s faith in politicians. However, Speaker of the House John Boehner told the press today, “This is an unfounded accusation.” Saying, “While it appears we have done something, if you look closely at the last two bills signed into law you will see that they are nothing but hundreds of pages filled with words that don’t really mean anything. For example, Subtitle D, sub-section 1021, sub-sub-section(e), clearly states ‘Nothing in this or any other title, subtitle, section, sub-section or sub-sub-section shall be construed to affect existing law relating to United States citizens, lawful resident aliens, illegal aliens, aliens from outer space, or any other persons, places or things—especially corporations.’ “ By the time, people of the press, gathered for Speaker Boehner’s statement, recovered from trying to figure out what he said; Boehner was gone. This, and the fact the same debt ceiling debate that we just went through a few short months ago is back, should ease people’s fears that this Congress will ever get anything done.

The National Transportation Safety Board is calling for a ban on talking while driving. Declaring it – too dangerous. NTSB Chairwoman Deborah Hersman told WTHAILA News that after they made the recommendation for banning hands free devices, they realized that taking to someone in your car is just as distractive; not to mention yelling at the kids in the back seat. “If you’re going to scream at your children and threaten to turn the car around, the least you can do is pull into a parking lot or rest area,” Hersman said. “Scolding siblings for yelling, she touching me or it’s my turn on the video game has been the cause of many accidents.” Mark Davis – with Big Ass Signs Advertising agency and a social media expert says while the NTSB might be well intentioned; an all-out ban goes too far. “I’m not in favor of distractive driving, but banning all talking seems a bit much. You may need to let another driver know that they’ve cut you off. And, hand signals are more distractive than talking.” How widespread is talking on the roads? The NTSB says about one out of ten married drivers in America and more than [...]

May I have your attention; this is the captain speaking. We’re getting a little low on fuel; please have cash ready when we land. Passengers on a flight from India to Britain were made to pay for fuel when the flight stopped in Vienna November 15. According to passengers, the crew took up a collection and even made them get off the plane and go to an ATM if they did not have the money with them. Which begs the question, what is included in the ticket price these days? In recent years, airlines have started charging for seat assignments, food, beverages, overweight passengers and baggage. What’s next, are they going to start charging to use the toilet? Oh, wait—they are already discussing that. Airlines really need to start breaking down the ticket price better. How much goes to the pilots, flight attendants, baggage handlers and so on. Or, is that going to be extra soon as well. I imagine the passengers must have been surprised when the plane landed and the flight attendants came down the aisle saying, “All right. Everyone chip in for gas.” Hotels will be next. You’ll pay for the room and the person at the [...]

In an unexpected move, police arrested hundreds of Occupy protesters early this morning. To learn what the protesters were charged with, WTHAILA News went to police headquarters and talked to officials there. We were told that the protesters had been charged with, “disturbing the rich”. This is the most serious charge that has stemmed from the Occupy movement so far. Disturbing the rich is a federal crime and one that is not taken lightly by prosecutors and judges. Judges have been historically tough on perpetrators of this heinous crime, as it is a crime against one of our smallest and endangered minorities, the filthy rich. Disturbing the rich in their natural habitat can lead to many unforeseen repercussions, such as, a drop in the stock market, a drop in the rich population and even the inconveniencing of the rich. A police spokesperson said that not only have rich people had to see and hear occupiers, but they have also had to interact with them at times.

One of my favorite subjects has always been Uranus. I remember as a kid, my parents would say, “Stop talking about Uranus, Quit drawing attention to Uranus,” and “He’s become obsessed with Uranus.” I asked my older brother once, “Can you see a face on Uranus like you can on Mars?” And, he said, “You could probably see your face on Uranus.” I first heard about Uranus in science class. After I saw a picture of Uranus, it was on my mind constantly. From that day forward, I would go to my science teacher Miss Mendez, and ask, “Can I see more pictures of Uranus.” I would pester her with questions like “How would I get a good look at Uranus, do you think there is life on Uranus, do you think there are any foreign objects on Uranus” and “Do you think I will ever be able to visit Uranus.” I asked her more times than I can count, “Has NASA ever probed Uranus.” One day she got tired of my questions, and yelled at me, “We’ve already probed Uranus, but we didn’t find shit!” She did tell me the best way to see Uranus, and that Uranus is [...]

Since October 15, the group called Occupy Richmond has been marching along sidewalks, holding up signs stating what they believe is wrong in America, and holding general assembly (GA) meetings to discuss ways to draw attention to their cause and get people to put pressure on our elected officials to fix the problems we face in America. I went to Kanawha Plaza where they have a base camp set up. There were about 125 people at the plaza when I went down there on Sunday morning, as they were just finishing a GA meeting. I took some pictures, and talked to some people about why they were there. John from Short Pump said, “I’m here because I feel the people of the United States do not run our government. It’s just a small number of people with the most money, who have the ability to influence what our government says and does who run it.” John told me, “After decades of deregulation and lobbying, our government is run by the needs of big business, banks, corporations and the Federal Reserve; leaving the average citizens of the United States with little or no say in what happens in our country.” Saying [...]

WASHINGTON — President Obama made a statement this afternoon, saying that he will be pulling out of Iraq by the end of the year. Although he has been in for a long time, the president has assured the American people that he is not pulling out too late. Mr. Obama said that “as of Jan. 1, 2012, the United States would begin a normal relationship and equal partnership with Iraq based on mutual interest and mutual respect, but without penetration.” In a videoconference on Friday morning with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Mr. Obama told him of the administration’s decision, even though the United States and Iraq had not come to an agreement on complete withdrawal. The United States had earlier agreed to pull out most of the way by the end of the year and leave just a little bit in, because some members of Congress were advocating for a small amount of penetration. But after Iraq’s Parliament refused an American demand to give soldiers immunity from legal prosecution, President Obama decided to withdraw completely. Mr. Obama appeared to leave open the possibility of future penetrations, saying, “we will continue discussions on how we might help Iraq, just as we [...]
